Duties

Identifies plant pathogens using identification tools
Contributes to and maintains pathogen collection
Contributes to development of new knowledge and technology in crop protection
Contributes to the development of alternative methods of crop protection
Contributes to development of cultures and genetic identification tools
Contributes to the production of presentations, reports and publications
Carries out research activities under lab, field and greenhouse conditions
Assigns work and provides daily oversight of staff and students.

The Harrow Research and Development Centre was established in 1909 in Harrow, Ontario. It is the location of one of the largest greenhouse research complex facilities in North America. The Centre manages two field sites, one on sandy soils at Harrow and a second one on clay-loam soils at the Honourable Eugene F. Whelan Experimental Farm close to Woodslee, Ontario.

The Harrow Research and Development Centre leads research in several areas, including:
• Soybean and invasive species
• Greenhouse production systems
• Environmentally sustainable agro-ecosystems for full-season crops in great lakes watershed
• Crop production & protection systems

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to fill a position on a full time temporary basis in Harrow, Ontario.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar permanent and temporary employment for the location indicated for this process.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution
in one of the following fields:

Entomology
Microbiology
Soil Science
Weed Science
Crop Science
Plant Pathology
Or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience

Degree equivalency

Experience planning and managing research projects in a field, research or laboratory environment
Experience in operating, maintaining and calibrating and trouble shouting laboratory equipment
Experience in designing experiments, developing project plans and developing methodologies/tools
Experience collecting and performing analysis on samples

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Experience in the use of molecular techniques, such as but not limited to DNA/RNA extraction from environmental matrices (soil, water, plant), standard and real time PCR.
Experience in microbiology – aseptic techniques and general isolation/purification of bacteria, fungi and/or viruses from environmental samples.
Experience in conducting statistical analysis of large data sets using statistical software programs (eg SAS)
Experience in supervising staff and allocating work
